Farmer's Market Roundup - Spring at Green City Market

By Anthony Todd in Food on Jun 9, 2009 4:00PM

This past Saturday, we visited the outdoor Green City Market for the first time this season. It's open on Saturdays and Wednesdays, and, being lazy, we ignored the usual wisdom of "arrive early or everything will be gone." We got there at 11 and found plenty left to buy - maybe it was the threat of bad weather that kept people away.

The selection of produce is still limited at this time of year, but what is available is delectable. Asparagus everywhere, including the largest pile of the green stalks that we had ever seen. Strawberries and rhubarb just begging to be made into pies, crisps and crumbles - look for a recipe coming soon. We picked up some more pasta from Pasta Puttana and a miniature strawberry pie from Hoosier Mama Pie Co., worth every cent of the $6 it cost. For the second week, vine-ripened and heirloom tomatoes were popping up - not everywhere yet, but any grower with a greenhouse had plenty. Our favorite find of the day was radishes - 5 different heirloom varieties for $2 a bunch. Eating them raw is always an option, and we're experimenting with new recipes, especially for the radish greens. Any suggestions?
