On the same day that the Sox recalled Jose Contreras from the minors to pitch -- and damnit, if he didn't pitch like he did in 2005 -- they also signed Freddy Garcia to a minor league deal. The Venezuelan, who is married to Ozzie Guillen's cousin, was originally acquired by the Sox midway through the 2004 season. He was one of the Sox workhorses during their World Series run, going 14-8 with a 3.87 ERA, and won 17 the following season. Traded to the Philadelphia Phillies after the '06 season, he pitched sparingly the past two years as he's dealt with injuries. Is WIlliams hoping that, like Contreras and Bartolo Colon, Garcia is finally healthy enough to contribute? The team is sending him to Arizona to get back into pitching shape. Now we just want to know -- how long before we finally see Aaron Rowand in pinstripes again?

the AAA starting 5 will be looking pretty intimidating with Freddy and hopefully Bartolo on the mound soon. and by intimidating, i mean their robust size and history, not their curent ERA's getting excedingly close to double digits.
and in transaction news, it will be announced later today that Aaron Poreda, their first round pick in 2007, will be coming up to the Southside from AA. not sure if Colon or Gobble will be getting the hook.
So are balky armed, overweight, former overpowering pitchers the wave of the future?
I'm starting to think the goal is to have the batter lose the ball in the vast sea of white that is the pitcher's uniform.
sweaty freddy should have enough perspiration on the ball to create some unhittable vortex known as a pitch.
