Meet Your Growing Home Contest Winner

We have a winner! Congratulations to Jo-Elle, who pulled out a story of a long-departed cat to best all comers. Jo-Elle receives two tickets to the Growing Home Benefit, 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Cultural Center.

Although Growing Home and various farmers market help me appreciate the value of locally grown food, the real credit for raising my food source awareness belongs squarely on my now-deceased cat, Sasha.

A dead cat? Seriously?

Yes. Yes I am.

Sasha died because she ate food that was processed in the plant that was at the center of the Pet Food Recall in 2007. Realizing that I had only a passing knowledge of where food originates and how it is produced, I embarked on educating myself. I joined a local CSA that year and made (and make) a concerted effort to frequent farmers markets on a weekly basis. I buy organic, locally grown when possible and have tried to eat more seasonally.

I miss Sasha, but it is because of her demise that I try to incorporate healthier and local food choices in my life.

Congratulations, again, Jo-Elle. Now play her off, keyboard cat:

You know the keyboard cat, Fatso, is dead as well.

Just a cheery day on Chicagoist.
