Meet Cheryl Reynolds, the worst mother in Chicago. On Saturday, Reynolds crashed her car as she allegedly reached for a bottle of alcohol in the car that had fallen onto the floorboard, causing her nine-year-old to smash her head into the windshield. Reynolds was subsequently charged with aggravated driving under the influence and ticketed for reckless driving, not having a valid drivers license, failing to wear a seat-belt and for operating an uninsured vehicle. The crash happened around 6:15 p.m. Saturday evening as the car crashed into a viaduct near East 83rd Street and South Jeffery Boulevard. Police reported yesterday that both Reynolds and her daughter were in stable condition. [WBBM, Fox]

Yeah, while it's kinda tough to debate what a "worst mother" would consist of, I've heard some stories that make even this seem tame. Let's just say this woman here is a member of the "Lousy Mom Club".

Sounds more like an idiot than the worst. I'd give the worst mom award to somebody with a pattern of poor behavior...

Fair enough. I've adjusted the hyperbole.

something's fishy about this story. if her daughter was in the car, why didn't she pick up the bottle and hand it to mom? this never woulda happened.

i liked the headline btw, it's for dramatic effect.

This week's? Surely some Chicago Mom has made her kid sell pot or something this week. And the entire city of Chicago is such a broad area.

How about "Saturday Night's Worst Mom at 83rd and South Jeffrey, Assuming There Wasn't Some Invisible Mom Hanging Out At That Spot Eating Her Young."

I can remember when I was 9 years old, my friend's mother wanted her to walk to the store and get her some butter because she wanted to make pancakes. This was summertime, and just starting to get dark.

Now, the corner store was not just around the corner, you had to walk through a bad area to get to it. My mom would not let me go with her, so she had to do it alone. (my mom was kind of a bitch that way...if that were me I would have just walked with the two girls, or driven them...but that's me).

IMO, that qualifies as way worse of a mother than this one. The mother in this story has some really big issues that she needs to deal with. And yeah, she was stupid...but the mom in my story exposed her young daughter to way bigger dangers and it was such a selfish, pre-meditated act too. I remember my friend walking away and being terrified. She had one of the most selfish moms I've ever encountered.

My point is that this is a dumb debate, as I sincerely doubt that Marcus was implying that he literally did the necessary research into the mothering techniques of every mother in Chicago and identified this woman as the worst. It was a silly headline on a blog known to be at least a little snarky and sarcastic from time to time.

That being said, sending your kid to the store to buy butter is hardly as bad as driving drunk with your kid in the car, no matter how bad the neighborhood.

Actually, it's sending a 9 year old girl out, in the dark, alone, to walk over a mile through iffy neighborhoods and busy streets to get butter because you have a late night craving.

This is demonstrable.

The girl in this story was reported to be in stable condition after colliding with the viaduct. What condition was your friend in when she went to the hospital after picking up the butter?

I'm not saying that the mom in this story isn't detestable.
But if the daughter came out of that drunk driving situation with no injuries, would that make what her mom did any less abhorrent?

This is just funny.

If you can show some evidence that purchasing butter--or for that matter, walking around when it's dark--is more dangerous than riding in a car driven by an intoxicated driver, then I might buy your argument. Otherwise, I'll have to still lean toward the mother committing the crime as being the worst.

Also, you might consider the probable lifestyle of a person so committed to her drinking that she'll do it while driving a car. That's one determined alcoholic, and someone likely to send her daughter out to buy butter and worse.

It's not about butter. Sheesh.

It's about a mother who sent a NINE year old out at night for her own selfish needs. This is a mother who used her daughter like she was her own personal remote control.
Would the little girl have to be raped for you to consider this an awful thing?

Both of the mothers are reprehensible, imo...but the one whose judgement is not hindered by alcoholism is worse.

Personally I get your point, Ingrid. A drunk mom driving her kid is pretty bad, but a sober mom sending her little girl out into a known bad neighborhood at night for some freaking butter... Both are bad, but...the risk of rape or worse is worth "butter"?

So you give extra points to those who choose to get drunk and put their children in danger. Duly noted.

No, I just have a little more empathy for the person with addiction problems and one who looks like she graduated from the school of hard knocks. With honors.

I've known plenty of children of alcoholics who would tell you where to put your empathy.

Hey..I'm a child of an alcoholic and I've got plenty of empathy for anyone with addiction problems.

...not to mention the children of someone murdered by drunk driver.

The point, that you can't seen to get, is that she is point out that both acts are wreckless. Or don't you think that sending your little girl out at night in a seedy neighborhood to get butter is wreckless?

Duly noted.

Can't wait for the "Worst Dad in Chicago" to follow this up!

Well, not Chicago but pretty close...

Worst Dad

I don't know about here, but that dude in California who snatched out his son's eyes and ate them is pretty high up on the list of "Worst Dad Ever."
