Clout College Clash Continues

The Tribune isn't taking the battle for applicant data in the case of the University of Illinois's clout list lightly. Last week, they ran a list of state legislators complete with statistics on how many students each has helped. Now, they've filed suit against the University for the release of applicant data, including, "the immediate release of grade point averages and standardized test scores of the hundreds of college applicants placed on an internal list of well-connected students." School spokesman Tom Hardy said, "The university believes it has a strong legal case and we are prepared to make it."

I wonder about the legality of releasing personal data such as grade scores and GPAs to the public. Are such things really subject to open records laws?

We are fortunate (no sarcasm) to have the Tribune doing all this digging.

Many of us have siblings, cousins, or friends who are in high school right now...often sweating over the college application ordeal. It is infuriating to think that they are at a disadvantage compared to the offspring of clout-heavy jerks.

Keep going, Tribune!

In response to BlueFairlane, the Tribune is NOT asking for any student's name or other identifying data to be included. That information can be blacked out easily. No one's privacy will be violated.

What the U of I is doing is trying to stonewall on everything possible. They are only trying to protect their corrupt system and their own backsides rather than trying to protect the rights of applicants.

While I object to the idea that clout should get you an advantage over more qualified applicants anywhere, this isn't an unusual circumstance and happens all over (not just in Illinois and not just for college admissions). The Tribune is making something out of nothing.

This would never happen at the University of New Mexico. Everyone's a Lobo, Woof Woof Woof!
