Burris Off The Hook For Perjury

It looks like at least one chapter in the saga of The Lord's Senator has been closed. The Tribune reports that Sangamon County State's Attorney John Schmidt has said there isn't enough evidence to bring perjury charges against U.S. Senator Roland Burris. The perjury issue came up a few months ago when Burris sent an affidavit to the state House committee before whom Burris testified that had information that contradicted his testimony.

Burris issued the following statement (via the Sun-Times' Lynn Sweet):

"I am obviously very pleased with today's decision by State's Attorney John Schmidt. His investigation was both thorough and fair, and I am glad that the truth has prevailed.

"This matter has now been fully investigated; I cooperated at every phase of the process, and as I have said from the beginning, I have never engaged in any pay-to-play, never perjured myself, and came to this seat in an honest and legal way. Today's announcement confirms all that.

"I am glad I can now put this matter behind me and get on with my work in the United States Senate serving the people of Illinois."

The Sun-Times also has the official press release from Schmidt [PDF] as well as the letter sent to State House leader Mike Madigan [PDF].

please no more Burris pictures. They are just too painfull especially when he slimes through the cracks

Yes! That picture makes baby jebus cry.

What is that he's sitting in?

That is the entrance to the Senate Restroom. He is passing out towels to the real senators as they come out.

The little "subway" that takes Congress critters to their offices, etc. At least that's what it looks like. If you go on a tour of the Capitol, you can ride in it. Or, at least you could.

That's what it looked like to me at first. Almost like a tram from Six Flags, Brookfield Zoo, or something. I never had the chance at a DC trip, my school was always short on funding.

My 2nd thought was it looked like a Ferris Wheel compartment.

I am a tad cynical about politics, but it's hard to believe that they actually ride around like its an amusement park. I guess it makes sense Burris is on the ride rather than looking out for Illinois.

How did he get off?
There are people who have been convicted of perjury and sentenced for their crimes on much less evidence.
Why is he so special?
This really reeks.

He didn't necessarily get "off."

The prosecuting attorney with jurisdiction (who happens to be GOP) apparently didn't think there was enough evidence that would result in a strong case.

It's not automatically a case of Burris being "special," but, perhaps, a simple case of due process.

Then again, if you, Ingrid, think he is guilty, he must be, right? I mean, that's how things should work, right?

I know, right?
Because I'm the only person in Chicago who thinks he's guilty.

It's not whether you think someone is guilty or not, Ingrid.

It's what you can prove and, in many cases, what you think will hold up on appeal.

Yes, politics plays a role, too, but that does not negate the above.

Accept that basic truth and you will better understand these things.

Granted, I think Burris is a shameless SOB, but still.

Gosh, matilda....I want to thank you for setting me on your knee and explaining such things to me!
I would never have known how things operate otherwise.
What?
We're not allowed to voice our frustrations here?
And like I said...people are serving terms after being convicted with much less evidence.
That's where my outrage is.
From where I stood, it looked pretty cut and dry what the many did.

"From where I stood, it looked pretty cut and dry what the many did."

So, you carefully reviewed all the evidence, and though about the appropriate case law, I assume.

Or, are you standing with all the other spectators?

It's not about voicing frustrations. I'm frustrated. But I also understand that maybe, just maybe, I don't know everything, and that my opinion is pretty worthless in the end.

Again, you are the person who thinks sports are all bad, and anyone who doesn't like pets is a monster, or something like that. So yeah, I'm comfortable with my position.

Seriously, though, have a great, relaxing (dry?) weekend.

whoa, matilda....please stop with your assumptions.

All sports are not bad. I thought I made it clear that I like sports...I just don't want them in school. I'd like them to be community based.

If you don't like pets, that's cool...just don't abuse them.

Where you come up with your bullshit is beyond me.

And all of the sudden you're defending Burris? Whatever.
Maybe you can help him engrave his next accomplishment on his marble castle.
