Art Institute Cuts 22

In an effort to balance next year’s budget, the Art Institute of Chicago is laying off 22 staff members, accounting for 3% of their workforce. The cuts are being made across the board, and take effect immediately; employees were notified on Thursday.
A spokesperson for the Art Institute praised the success of the new Modern Wing, indicating that without that success, the cuts would be deeper.
Other steps being taken to help balance the budget were a voluntary 10% pay cut from the director, salary freezes, and a week-long furlough for employees. Public research hours will also be reduced. [Trib]
