Chicagoist Podcast 4/22 - Chicago's Guardian Angels

GAlogo062209.jpg Another Monday afternoon means it's time for another entry into the Chicagoist Podcast Series! This week in the Podcast, in response to the flurry of conversation about the Guardian Angels posts, we decided that hearing from an actual Angel could be somewhat illuminating. After all the discussion about vigilantism, about assaults, about what kind of training goes on and whether or not anyone's actually seen a Guardian Angel, we thought we'd try to get some answers from the guy in charge.

Miguel Fuentes is the head of the Chicago Guardian Angels chapter, and has been associated with the Angels for two decades. What is their take on the accusations about the videos? Where do the Angels really patrol? What kind of crimes do they really focus on? And what's Miguel's side on the group's Youtube videos that have been fueling the controversy?

All of our podcasts, including this week's, can be found on iTunes or our RSS feed, and all suggestions or thoughts can be directed to our legion of producers and editors via email at your convenience. Thanks for listening!

So much nonsense from this clown

-"So-called smart people"and "Vigilantes": I like that he's espousing the usual thuggish, no-nothing party line. Oh those smart people, they don't understand.

-Crime has been on the decline for decades. More arrests now? Perhaps because they are instigating and going after such threats are taggers and people with weed.

-It's not a felony to possess spray paint. Good to see someone so interested in law and order doesn't know the law

-The weed video: So they started harassing a guy and it escalated and they're the victims? Awww. Poor babies.

-"It doesn't cost the taxpayers". Neither do gangs or the Klan, but I don't want their interpretation of the law on the streets.

How about speaking with someone from Copwatch Karl? Or even the CTA cops?

Copwatch is a good idea. I'll look into that. CTA cops would be harder, but that doesn't mean it's not worth doing.

I'd have to stop every few minutes to let the train go by, however.

If you want to contact Copwatch I am the guy you need to speak to. The names Spencer "Thunderball" Thayer and I run a good portion of the day to day operations of our organization. Email me at spencer@chicagocopwatch.org or just go to the site and fill out the contact form it goes to me.

the Guardian Angels are nothing more than a cash cow for Sliwa. Hey, how come they have to beg for money from the public if Sliwa is a millionaire? They are basically panhandlers, in other words, bums. They give no reciepts for the money that they panhandle. That's illegal! How do you know where the money that they beg for goes to? They're a cult like the Moonies, panhandling and begging on the street. If one of them asks you for money and doesn't give a verifiable reciept, then call a cop and ask for them to be arrested! If one of these stooges puts a hand on you, then SUE them for assault. Their "citizen's arrest" is nonsense! they are not certified by the city or state to detain anyone! Send these hobos out of Chicago!
