We'll admit, we've left plenty of stuff on trains before: papers, books, umbrellas, even a scrap of paper with the phone number of a young woman who was way too pretty for us anyway. But we've never left a baby on board a train as a woman did last night on a northbound Union Pacific North Line train. No charges have been filed against the woman who left the baby on board when she got off at North Chicago. And yes, mother and baby were safely reunited. [CBS 2]

Stroger Makes Hollywood Play

I've never left my babies anywhere either, but I'm not going to sit in judgement on this woman. I don't ever want to experience the panic she felt when she realized what she had done and who knows what kind of stress she was under or what kind of day she had, where she would be able to forget her own baby. There are days when I would forget my head if it weren't attached to my shoulders.
There are so many stories about parents forgetting their babies inside a car, and they die from the intense heat. Can you imagine living the rest of your life knowing it took hours and hours for your baby to die a tortuous death due to the fact you forget it in your car? I can't imagine criminal charges being brought against the parent...just living out the rest of your life would be punishment enough.
Ingrid,
You should post that on the Tribune and Sun-Times message boards. You should see some of the things the mouth-breathers are saying about that woman. Yours was a very well-said, well-thought-out comment that is absolutely true.
Glad to see reasonable responses here. Folks are right -- you go on some of these message boards and you'd think the woman dropkicked the baby into the Chicago River after she pissed on it.
I don't have children, but a situation like this is one of my very biggest fears about fatherhood. Poor woman.
As long as she didn't send it out for butter...
HA!
It took me a minute to figure out where the butter came from but I got it...ha ha...very funny. I suppose I should have changed butter to cigarettes then you all could have focused on the point of the anecdote, instead of being distracted by the butter, eh?
Believe me, the butter had nothing to do with it.
Hahaha!
i saw a similar incident almost happen on a red line train last year. a shockingly young couple (16, maaaybe) had an infant in a stroller (girl was pushing) and were also both carrying large bags as if they'd just done some shopping. the boy was very agitated and staring at his phone while also fielding strange questions from the girl about 'oldtimers disease,'etc. i could just see from the guys face that his situation sucked and, unfortunately, he was stuck. as they approached their stop, they both gathered their bags in their hands, stood up and turned toward the doors of the train. as the doors opened, no one was at the helm of the stroller. only a stern and impatient look from the guy to the girl made the girl remember the baby!! i felt like i was surely on candid camera or something.
I once saw a woman loading her car up with groceries place her infant (in the baby seat) on the hood. She was dashing about and got into the driver's seat. Just as she was backing up about five other shoppers, including yours truly, dashed over and stopped her car.
Yep, baby still on the roof.
She burst into tears and thanked us profusely. People make mistakes.
And don't read the suntimes comments. They make youtube comment threads look like Granta.
I have had several good, good mothers say that's exactly why they make it a habit to never put their carseats with baby, on top of the car when they're getting ready to go.
Even a good mother can make an honest mistake.
When you have a million things on your mind and you're in a hurry, it is so easy to just forget.
I just hope this poor woman is not reading all of the negative shit that's floating around the internet now. I'm sure she feels bad enough already.
I don't understand why everyone is bringing up the Suntimes, but this woman is obviously black and/or a democrat. I blame Obama and the Cubs suck.
Separating ourselves from the emotional connection that a baby is a human life, it is still a new addition to the parents' lives. As such, when you fall back into tasks based strictly on rote memorization, I could see how you might forget this new step that was added a couple months ago, considering you've been doing things the same way for 10-15 adult years.
That said, I am way too paranoid about forgetting things to forget something like a baby.
This seems appropriate.
That was pretty funny. I love the ending: "Like Carol, fuck her!"
I wonder if this country had less children would we value them more?
Probably not. Look at China where they limit the number of children you can have. Look at the number of baby girls in orphanages after being abandoned.
I was thinking more of a child tax that would got to an
environmental fund
