White Sox Pitcher Mark Buehrle Hurls Perfect Game

What an afternoon at The Cell where White Sox ace Mark Buehrle has just hurled a perfect game as the Sox beat the Rays 5-0. Buehrle struck out six in the game. The play of the game came from Dewayne Wise who not only saved the perfect game, but made an amazing home run robbing catch over the wall in left-center field in the top of the ninth. A Josh Fields grand slam is what put the Sox up for good early on in the second inning. Buehrle threw 116 pitches, 76 for strikes, and got 11 ground outs, 10 fly outs, and the six K's.

It's the second perfect game in White Sox history; the last one was in 1922. The last perfect game in MLB was in 2004. "It hasn't really sunk in yet," Buehrle said after the game." He also left the post-game press conference early to take a call from the First Fan, President Obama.

UPDATE: The Tigers lost which means the Sox are tied with Detroit for first place with a weekend series kicking off tomorrow.

those of you who were puzzled why BA was sent down and not Wise, now you see why, you can't replace speed.

Dammit! I missed seeing a perfect game by a day.

Awesome, though. It couldn't have happened to a better guy.

yeah i missed it by 2 days, so instead i got to see a Jenks meltdown

i'm a cubs fan. but i'm truly a baseball fan. and that's pretty awesome. there's a small part of me that's rolling my eyes, 'why the SOX?' regardless, it's something that's so rare that i offer my kudos.

Here's the video of the Wise robbed HR in the 9th

Wow. That catch in the 9th inning?? Fucking crazy.

that catch was awesome. AWESOME. quite a feat considering this no-hitter was against the rays.

Obama just called him during his press conference to send his congrats

congrats to a class act

Yeah, I'm framing my tickets ASAP.

Might post tomorrow on seeing it first-hand.

I would have given anything to have been there. Had to settle for Gameday at work.

Absolutely amazing!

Maaaaan, I had tickets for last night and today and chose to go last night so I wouldn't miss work. I blew it.

Truly awesome. I was nervous sitting at my desk listening to it.

And, not to beat an almost-dead horse, but after seeing the video and hearing Hawk's call of the last out, I'm very glad I listened to it on the radio, where Ed Farmer actually said what happened instead of shrieking YES! over and over.

Good job, Buehrle! First place!

Also a Cubs fan, and I also have to give it up for that performance. Absolutely amazing, against a top-quality lineup. Congrats to the Sox and their fans. You can enjoy this one forever.

some interesting tidbits:
Today the Sox had 5 runs on 6 hits ->56

in Buehrle's 2 no-hitters, both the following happened in each game:
-same home plate umpire who also wears number 56
-game lasted exactly 2 hours and 3 minutes
-Sox winning run come off a Grand Slam

nuts!

It was all thanks to the opening pitch, courtesy of Miguel Torres! Haha

I was at the game today and the shock of it all is just wearing off hours afterward. Un-freakin-believable!

What's funny about my situation is that because I was on the concourse at a foodstand during the entire 1st inning, not really paying attention to the game, I didn't know Mark had pitched the perfect game until after it was over!

I didn't know he didn't give up a hit or a walk @ that time, so I was watching the game anxiety-free, live!
I was sitting with my cousin and we were joking around while watching, but not nearly as intense as everyone else because we didn't know.
My mom, sisters, and friend didn't say anything about it, and the people around us I suppose, didn't want to jinx it so no one uttered 'perfect game' around us.
But I did notice that pass the 6th, people were cheering every Rays out like it was the last.

I remembering turning to my cousin during like the 8th ans saying, "Man, Mark is killing these guys right now." lol.
After the last out, we when he got mobbed my the team, my cousin said 'Was that a no hitter?' and I was like 'What?' and I turning to the big screen and it said it was a perfect game.
I was like 'What the flippin hell! I didn't even know what I was watching? Awesome!'
And as if, I had ESP I told my cousin to film some of the game after the 7th so we have the final out on video too.

Wow cubs fans, thanks for stating you're cubs fans and then condescending to praise a Sox player.

Can't just praise a guy based on athletic skill? Have to get in that you SHOULD hate him?

what the hell are you talking about?

Yeah, I'm confused. I was just giving credit where credit was due. Get the chip off of your shoulder.

I just don't see why you have to say you're a Cubs fan. What difference does that make?

Of all the dumb things to whine about ...

Personally, as a Sox fan, I appreciate having the other side show their respect and congratulations for a job well done, despite their own allegiance. It isn't a sign of Sox hate. It's a sign of good sportsmanship.

So shut up. You're making us look bad.

saw some more highlights this AM at the gym.

I cannot believe how far and how fast Wise actually had to run to track that ball down. plus the bobble. wow.

Couldnt have happened to a better team.

From a long time baseball fan in DC.
