Wandering Goat Recap

Sunday night marked the first of Stephanie Izard’s Wandering Goat dinners, a series of “traveling dinners” that lead up to the opening of her new restaurant, The Drunken Goat, this coming winter. Tickets sold out in a matter of minutes but the lucky ones that got them were told the dinner would be at “Roger’s House.” Turns out Roger is Stephanie’s friend Roger Herring, chef/owner of Socca in Lakeview. We arrived at a large town home and shown to the spacious backyard, filled with friends, food lovers, and a notable goat piƱata that we imagined was filled with truffle infused bacon mousse. (It was never cracked open so we will never know.) Three Floyd’s Alpha King and Gumballhead were on tap and an array of red and white Australian wines were offered as well.

The Wandering Goat series is meant to highlight/give people an idea of what kind of food will be served at The Drunken Goat. Several stations throughout the backyard served dishes like: oyster with bacon and chives, lamb-stuffed calamari, braised pork shoulder, and an octopus with fried pancetta salad. Stephanie plated dishes alongside Top Chef Season 1 semifinalist Lee Anne Wong, who was in from New York to assist and hang out. At one point we looked over and it felt like we were watching an actual episode of Top Chef, but better because we could actually eat the amazing food, exclaim "This is del-liiicious!" in our best Padma voice, and then go back for seconds. Dessert was Black Dog Gelato - a choice of roasted red pepper, banana curry or lemon ginger, along with a selection of cheeses including a “drunken cheese” spread with bacon that we wanted to eat nine plates of.

Very simply put, it was a fancy backyard barbeque. It was lovely. Most of the people there didn’t know one another and yet we found ourselves making friends left and right because everyone was so excited to be there (if not for the food, for the “celebrity” aspect of it, we suspect) and at one point heard someone declare, “this is the party of the summer!” We couldn’t recommend more trying to score tickets to her next event, a feat which seems only possible by twitter stalking Stephanie for the next update on when tickets go on sale.

So jealous! Food looks amazing. I tried to get tickets but they were sold out already by the time I got out of a meeting fifteen minutes after they went on sale. Hopefully, I'll be luckier the next time...

Hey, I'm in that picture! That braised pork shoulder was killer. I'm literally using Twitter now solely for the purpose of trying to get tickets for the rest of the series.

The calamari was spectacular, as was the octopus salad-- this from someone who's not typically a seafood person. I'd also rate the gelato as unfuckingbelievable, but as I've known Jessie for a long time I'm probably biased.

Also not mentioned but absolutely wonderful: the DJ who dropped "I Can See Clearly Now" as some rainclouds passed through, eliciting a wave of chuckles; and the servers and staff (Hi, Winter!) who chatted cheerfully while plating dish and after dish of deliciousness without pause for two hours.

Also funny: The people in the neighborhood telling my buddy to "go back to Wrigleyville" as he got into his Jetta after the event. I didn't stop laughing for 10 minutes.

And damn that was some good gelato.

@ UTV: haha- nice! are you orange shirt guy or maroon shirt guy or white pants girl?

Orange. It's a very nice picture of the back of my head. My mother is so proud.

Yes! I neglected to mention the DJ who played everything from Stevie Wonder to Kings of Leon to "I can see clearly now." Fun.

This is what I don't understand:

This woman was on a reality show where she acted respectfully, humbly, and very good natured. WIns it because of her talent and creativity. Then uses the money and notoriety to further her career in the town she has worked in for years, not LA or New York where she could become a "celebrity chef" appearing on every talk show under the sun and slapping her name on thousands of products. All the while showing the people of Chicago her intense love of all things gastronomic.

Seriously, good for her and I wish her all the best.

I think I ate like 4 pork shoulders. Then went back for seconds...

How did I miss this? This sounds like an amazing experience. Thanks for sharing Chuck!
