ESPN News is reporting the Chicago White Sox have managed to land San Diego Padre ace Jake Peavy at the MLB trade deadline. We're tracking this story for details. Peavy has been on the DL since early June. MLB Network reports the Sox shipped the Padres four players in return for Peavy: left-handers Aaron Poreda and Clayton Richard and right-handers Dexter Carter and Adam Russell

"Why?" -- Sox fan I work with

He's optimistically slated to come back late-August but more likely September.

He had an ankle sprain earlier, yes, but not having to run the bases in the AL will help. Also, it's a four year deal. Even if he doesn't do a lot this year, I'll take a staff with him, Burhle, Danks and Floyd any time. None of the guys they gave up are proven of anything.

exactly, i'm not sold on Poreda as doing anything in the future. Carter has been solid in AA this season. Richard is no different than throwing Torres out there, and Russell was given an oppt out of the pen and he's done nothing.

So, to revisit a comment I directed toward Cubs fans the first time this came up ...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

thanks for once again proving how obsessed most sox fans are with the Cubs.

Are you kidding? You're the same retard that thought sending Bobby Scales down to Iowa was a massive mistake.

Sorry. Let me clarify my argument:

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Did I miss something, have the Cubs been transferred to the AL Central to compete with the Sox for a division title? Or is there a new rule where only one team from the same city can win a division title?

All I can say is ...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

2010-2012 starting 4 of Buehrle, Peavy, Danks, and Floyd. not too shabby.

for next year its probably a great trade, but its a bit perplexing especially since Kenny Williams' montra has always been about winning "this year".

not necessarily. if he returns in the end of August, you can get away w/ throwing a spot #5 pitcher (Torres) out there 3 times before then. if, and a big IF, the Sox are still in it going into September, the Sox top 4 are going to be very intimidating.

sorry, 4 starts:

Sox schedule thru 23rd
3 more vs Yanks (Richard Spot)Home
3 vs LAA (Richard Spot)Home
3 Clev
3 At Seattle (Richard Spot)
3 At Oakland
3 KC (Richard Spot) Home
3 Baltimore

So what has Kenny done that says he doesn't plan on winning this year. None of the guys he gave up were contributing much to this year's team anyway. If Peavy gets a couple of starts this year and does well...gravy.

I think this has to be looked at more as a long term move. The Sox might have a team good enough to squeak into the playoffs -- like last year -- but they are by no means a legitimate World Series contender. I don't think a healthy Peavy would change that given the inconsistent hitting and defense. Add Peavy to the rotation in 2010 and beyond with Buehrle, Floyd and Danks while Ramirez, Getz, Beckham mature and we might be looking at another World Series in the next couple years.
