A new crosswalk sting kicks off tonight, aimed at ticketing drivers who risk pedestrian lives. The Chicago Police department has done similar stings in the past, but this one is different: it's during night-time hours. Officials told the Tribune the four main areas they're focusing on this go-around are River North, Austin, Wrigleyville and 79th Street from about Ashland to the Dan Ryan Expressway. Failure to yield to crossing pedestrians will get you a ticket that can range from $50 to $500, so beware and follow the law.

I'm sure this has nothing to to with it being near the end of the quota period...erm...month.
It's a good thing to do all the same. Just over the weekend some bag of hair in Andersonville almost mowed me down for having the temerity to try and cross Foster Avenue.
curiously, i was in a non-light crosswalk intersection saturday night trying to cross State and even the police cars that passed by did not stop.
just another example of police not even following traffic rules, blowing through stop signs, etc
would love to have cpd sting themselves
Belmont/Sheridan would be a great intersection for a stakeout. I narrowly avoid death there daily.
Indeed. I work a bit further north on Sheridan and it is AWFUL.
Ashland between Foster and, maybe Irving? Because of those ridiculous plant dividers you have folks stranded crossing over a mound of dirt. Something out a JG Ballard book.
Smells like City and State extorting drivers for money.
What exactly is the law? Is it to yield when the pedestrian steps off the curb?
More or less, yes. I think there's language like "displays intent to cross the public way" or other legalese.
They ran one of these just north of Broadway and Argyle a month or so ago at the crosswalk that connects an Aon office building to the parking structure across Broadway. They were pulling people over left and right. Pretty much whenever a cop was available to pull someone over, the "pedestrian" would try to cross, a car wouldn't stop, and they'd get nailed. Probably saw four or five get pulled over as I was walking by and the same number already getting their tickets.
You know what would probably help? Road signs.
Too bad the cops werent around when that guy threatened to beat me up for almost running me over in the crosswalk.
