Police Call on Rogers Park Residents to Stem Gang Presence

An increase in robberies and gang members hanging out in various parts of Rogers Park has area residents worried.

But without residents' support, police say they can only do so much, according to a Chi-Town Daily News report.

During a CAPS meeting this week, police confirmed that there is an increase in gangs in the area, as members attempt to mark out new territory. But unless a gang member commits a crime, there isn't anything police can do about the spread, the report said.

"Being in a gang is not a crime," Sgt. John Delgado, a police force vet of 13 years, told residents.

However, Delgado encouraged the community to create block clubs, or neighborhood watch organizations, and to call police with any word of suspicious activity. Delgado said a "new two-tier street lighting system" would be installed to address safety worries, according to the report.

The jump in the number of thefts in the area was also addressed during the CAPS meeting. Police gave residents pointers such as walking in groups and being aware of their surroundings, since some of the robberies occurred while victims were talking on their cell phones.

Thanks, I'll be sure to thank the CPD when they arrest the guy after he mugs me.

Funny how we keep hearing about the attacks in Lincoln Park and how "scared" residents in that area are, and yet this is the first reporting I've seen on the increasing violence and thefts in Rogers Park.

We just accept that in certain neighborhoods crime is to be expected. Fucking shameful.

1. The Chi-Town News article is actually about a CAPS meeting for Beat 2412 which is West Rogers Park.
Just brilliant Chi-Town News, you can't even get your neighborhoods correct!
That's one reason many of us would like the district renamed as the "Far North" district, so Rogers Park ceases to be tarred with crimes in West Rogers Park or Edgewater, which are part of the district, but are always labeled as Rogers Park crimes.

2. As a 50+ year resident of Rogers Park, I can tell you that a major part of the problem is the cops themselves!
I don't know what the cops in other districts are like, but a lot of the ones here in 24 are lazy beyond belief!
They won't get out of their cars when the is a call of a disturbance on a street. You would think that they're scared of the gang members!
Add to that, the lack of a permanent district commander. I'm sure some of the cops up here know they can get away with crap that wouldn't be allowed with a real commander, not a lieutenant that's just an acting commander.

3. Block clubs?
That's always the cops response. What bullshit!
There are numerous "hot spots" where the cops are allowed first demand that gang members scatter immediately & if they return they are supposed to be arrested.
I walk through a few of the hot spots, the cops say they're secret & then tell us at the beat meetings where they are.
The gang members are out there & you just watch the cops drive by & ignore them!

4. Another major problem is the goddamned CHA which does a truly shitty job of screening tenants & then evicting tenants that violate CHA's rules & state laws.

5. There are a few do-gooder groups here that are just criminal organizations themselves.
One is Lawrence Hall on the 6600 block of Ashland which is always getting its poor, put upon residents arrested for committing crimes.
Another is this church at Pratt & Ashland which has its members attend the beat meetings & then they go to the gang members & report to them what "horrible lies" we've talked about them at the meeting!

Well, Libby, you migh want to remember how bad it was here in the 80s and 90s. Howard street was "the jungle" and morse was terra-incognita.

If there is gang violence increasing it makes sense that it would be west of clark, not east of clark. Because I don't see much evidence of it.

There's plenty of gang activity east of Clark.
It's on Ashland, around the L stations & at the lake.

I meant evidence of an increase! No shit there's gangs on Morse, Howard, Jonquil, fuck, all just up the street from me.

I just haven't seen an increase is all (knocks wood).

Maybe it was cause of the cold summer.

No gang injunctions in Chicago of IL? The L.A. City Attorney loves using 'em!

And I forgot, Morse Ave is gang central!

There is a noticeable increase in loitering and sauntering hoodlums, hand in hand with the amount of vacant foreclosed multi-unit properties. Gangs up here have been feeling the squeeze with the real estate boom and now see an opportunity to expand, broaden their base, increase brand awareness.
