We're not experts on weather, but we can tell you that this past winter was ridonkulously cold (yes, that's the scientific term). Now, the Farmer's Almanac is telling us that our upcoming winter will be dry (yay!) but also "bitterly cold" (boo!). The almanac likes to get all fancy pants and show how it's always spot on, thus already incurring our wrath and it's only early September. We, however, are just going to ignore it. At least until it's too cold to.
Thanks for the tip, Shellster!

bring it on. i'd much rather have bitter cold with less snow than messy snowy streets and sidewalks all winter. man up!
I think I feel pretty much the same way...I was just thinking the other day that I am so sick and tired of shoveling snow. If all I have to do is put on another layer of clothing before leaving in the morning, that's great...better than getting up an hour early to shovel, right?
Marcus...it takes at least a few years for the skin to thicken up and get used to the cold :)
i thought my blood was thickening on my most recent trip back to NOLA a month back, but the layers I'm putting on at night these days prove it's still not thick enough.
I can take the snow, at least it's something to look at. It's the cold that kills me. I dont like it when it physically hurts to leave my house.
No...the snow makes the cold worth it. Otherwise grey and miserable.
Also, I hate these pictures of ice on the lake. They always remind me of close-ups of dry skin and creep me out.
Fluffy, pretty, white snow is one thing. Wintery precipitation which has frozen into oblong, rock hard gray chunks indistinguishable from bits of concrete ripped up from the street by the daily plow assault are quite is quite another.
i like snow, it's just that it's a pain in the ass in the city. if i had a garage, i wouldn't care half as much. but dealing with parking, plus slipping and sliding around on sidewalks that haven't been shoveled.. i'll take gray and dry bitter cold over that...
Pro:
Having a garage (as I do)
Con:
Only being able to access it via the unplowed alley in a car that drives like a go-kart
The National Weather Service disagrees. Apparently there's an El Nina or Nino system that will make it warmer and wetter. Though I don't know who to place my bets with...
Well, if you're a driver, cold with no snow might be better, after our recent winter where the whole snow/melt/freeze cycle left all of those axle-busting potholes all over. BTW, has anybody gotten money back from the city for that (if, in fact, they filed a claim)?
My feeling is that anything below 15 degrees is all the same -- comically cold. And snow = potholes, so no thanks to that.
Remember those times in winter when you do a little dance because the temps are in double digits? I'm trying to forget...
Actually that garage environment can also intensify salt corrosion
agreed w/ Slaphappy. Less snow = fewer potholes. I'll take the cold.
The Farmers Almanac? Really?
the real deal..
Midwest US January-March 2010: above average temperature / average precipitation
So much for global warming. Oh wait, global warming actually makes it colder. I forgot. Makes perfect sense.
You're really looking to mix it up, eh?
