Storefront Manifesto II: Mission Independent Baptist
A couple weeks back, we introduced you to the best storefront manifesto you'd see that day. Well, it's a brand new day, we've moved a few blocks to the west and uncovered another one that aims far higher than just the Daley administration. The Mission Independent Baptist Church has distilled the finest doses of "crazy" out of right-wing email chains, and are presenting their politics in the name of the Lord.
If you thought that politically active ministries in the city of Chicago were limited to the likes of Father Pfleger and south-side preachers shilling for aldermen, think twice. If you thought that right-wing fundamentalism was something limited to areas south of I-80, try again. Seemingly unconcerned about IRS restrictions on political speech by churches, Pastor Edward Fort and his flock worship in a small storefront in Lincoln Square at Leland and Rockwell, just around the corner from boutique stores and tiny restaurants, quietly and innocuously, letting their storefront billboard do much of the speaking for them while godless heathen coffee drinkers ingest their Beans & Bagels fare right in front of them.
From Birtherism to Alan Keyes endorsements to fighting the devil and poking Democrats with logically dubious argumentation, and covering every corner of the fundie stereotype (even going so far as to decry the "Satanic" banner ads on their own site) Mission Independent Baptist takes the proverbial cake. Which you can enjoy after dinner at the Pizza Art Cafe, right around the corner.
