Banana Soft Serve
How do you make it? Simple. Peel and freeze some ripe bananas. Then put them in a food processor and give it a go; we had to push down the banana bits a few times. After a while, we had a creamy, smooth blend. (See step-by-step instructions on Instructables here. We grabbed a spoon and sampled. It was much more creamy than we'd expected. It was only then that we decided to take a picture so our sample has softened quite a bit in that picture (again, we recommend you take a peek at the articles to see better pictures!). Ours was similar to soft-serve which was, admittedly, partly due to being over-eager to try this out and not letting our bananas harden to rocks in the freezer. heh.
The nicest surprise was that it wasn't overwhelmingly....banana-y. This was most likely because there was not that artificial banana taste that tends to linger on the tongue. It was clean and light. The articles mention the possibility of adding vanilla, honey, or peanut butter to the mix and blending it together for a different flavor combination. We also recommend that you do this with no less than 4 bananas. This worked well enough that we think our 3-year old niece would be happy to sit down with a bowl of this 'ice cream' and would never know the difference. Far healthier dessert, without a doubt. If you give this a try, let us know how it goes, any additional tips you may have, and what flavor variations worked!

How ripe were these bananas? A couple of brown spots? Blemish free? Just wondering if the taste changes a lot if a couuple of the 'nanas are a little overripe.
Yum. I will add tiny chocolate chips to mine.
I read this awhile ago and thought "hmm, frozen banana" and basically tried the lazy version of it -- froze banana mash and then mashed it up s'more myself. Either the banana was too ripe or the blender makes a big difference, because what I got was overly-sweet, slightly watery frozen banana mush. If I ever try it the "right" way, I'm going to use less-ripe bananas.
The blender does make a difference. It magically creates a creamier texture.
The next time I do this I want to throw in some chocolate chips and walnuts - homemade chunky monkey.
I would like to eat this whilst having sex. Is that weird?
No, weird would be eating it in lieu of sex.
Didn't George Costanza do that with a sandwich? :)
Even weirder would be having sex WITH the banana concoction.
You *could* microwave it I suppose.
I have been doing this for years. Banana ice cream. It's fantastic.
Also, would like to recommend that Magic Bullet. Frozen blueberries, bananas, mangoes with some juice and or kefir, throw in some whey powder and it's a meal. I like the Magic Bullet because you can drink out of the same container you mix, so it makes clean up so much easier.
The Magic Bullet sounds like the name of a sex toy.
jeez...I just had to google the name to make sure I got it right :/
It does sound like the name of a sex toy too.
(sex and food...the two best things in the world :)
That's because it is.
I would love the Magic Bullet but... I CAN'T! Those commercials annoy the hell out of me. Who ARE those people and what are they doing in that woman's house eating all of her food. And why is Eric Idle there?
LOL.
I bought mine at Linens & Things though, before it went out of business. I am going to laugh now, every time I use it now that I know that it's the name of a sex toy.
(not that there's anything wrong with that :)
Nice. I frequently end up with a banana or two that is just a little too ripe to eat normally, but I don't have enough to make banana bread (plus I'm lazy). This sounds like a good way to keep them from getting wasted.
Toss in a little Ovaltine powder and this is my standard breakfast at least twice a week. I do it with the hand blender right in my travel cup.
Oh yummy, I need to try this. I usually try to have a protein drink before I head to the gym. Now, I'm going to use this recipe with a little protein power on top for a cold treat!
Those are great suggestions on variations! I'm going to buy some extra bananas tomorrow at the grocery store and then sit around impatiently, waiting for them to ripen and then freeze.
