Last night, Kanye was scheduled to appear alongside Jay-Z and Rihanna on the premiere of Jay Leno's new show, but the host took the opportunity to bring Kanye out and talk to him about Sunday night's Taylor Swift Thunder Theft. Kanye's apology seemed as genuine as you can expect from him. And for the conspiracy theorists who still think it was staged, well...we can't blame you. We're suckers for conspiracy theories. The whole thing stinks to high heaven, but, as we pointed out yesterday, to pull off such a stunt would require a level of self-awareness on Kanye's part. So let's just blame Leno for slipping something into Kanye's drink on Sunday night.
Meanwhile, perhaps to the funniest thing to come out of this is ABC's Terry Moran failing to know the difference between ON and OFF the record. While observing an interview with President Obama last night, Moran tweeted, "Pres. Obama just called Kanye West a "jackass" for his outburst at VMAs when Taylor Swift won. Now THAT'S presidential." It was immediately removed but nothing ever truly disappears from the interwebz (via The Swamp).
An ABC News spokesperson explained what happened to Politico:
In the process of reporting on remarks by President Obama that were made during a CNBC interview, ABC News employees prematurely tweeted a portion of those remarks that turned out to be from an off-the-record portion of the interview. This was done before our editorial process had been completed. That was wrong. We apologize to the White House and CNBC and are taking steps to ensure that it will not happen again.
Insert "You Lie!" joke here.

jesus christ on a bike, now i'm supposed to worry about the backlash from this and its impact on health care legislation and whatever the fuck else we're yelling about?
i've just reviewed some of this idiot's tweets and .... eeaaahhhh ... edward r. murrow must be digging toward earth's core.
to all concerned: keep your damn fool mouths shut.
Is it just me, or is the president's use of the term "jackass" in reference to an egotistical poop culture figure not necessarily unpresidential?
I would have to think that Terry Moran will never see the inside of the WH press room again.
Hey....at least I now know I'm on the same page as Obama as far as West goes.
My first thought upon hearing this was that Obama's approval rating is going to skyrocket.
And here we have point #1836466 on how blogs and Twitter are bad for journalism: there is no "off the record."
I wonder what kind of beer Kanye and Taylor Swift will have have at the White House during this month's episode of CSPAN's smash hit "Conflict Resolution with the President?"
On a related note Obama also noted that the grass is green and the sky is up.
Shame on Terry Moran for posting such an obvious off-the-record comment. What the hell was he thinking?
NBC spent the entire summer shaping their marketing around this whole "Americans want more comedy" rationale for Leno. Nothing says comedy like "What would your dead mother think." Yikes.
He really asked him that?!
Yup, and Kanye just about broke down.
I think it's time to let this one go folks.
It was time to let this one go before it started.
Oh Christ, I'm sick of this. Where's there an adulterous congressman to blanket all media stories when you need one?
So Kanye was booked on Leno, he does something "outrageous" (but tame enough to be broadcast) at the VMAs a day before and then comes on (the first) Leno show, driving up ratings and creating all kinds of chatter (like..er...this) about the show and Kanye and Leno.
No need for a tinfoil hat, that's just smart showbiz.
President Obama hates black people.
Well, one.
