U of I President Expected To Resign

Gov. Pat Quinn said he expects University of Illinois president B. Joseph White to resign today in the wake of the school's clout controversy. Quinn said, "He's let me know that something is imminent and I think that'll happen today," adding, "This is totally voluntary." The Tribune has more here.

There has to be a pretty juicy back story here. All these tall timbers dropping over getting some not so smart connected kids into school is amazing. And do you suppose it might be going on at other schools like DePaul?

DePaul's a private school. I can guarantee things like this happen there.

U of I's an agent of the state government. They are supposed to be held to a higher standard of fairness than private institutions.

Well, I think the point is that this is a state school. It is funded by the state so tuition can stay low and allow the states "best and brightest" to attend. DePaul, Loyola, etc. can charge any tuition they want and let in anyone they want. State officials trading favors with Academia to allow students who otherwise wouldn't get in is completely sleazy... What amazes me is that this story has caused this level of reaction in Illinois! I for one chalked it up to just another day for machine politicians...

sorry for the double posts. and the post being in the wrong spot. I'm just sorry in general.

This is one of those stories I think of when I ponder how quickly Illinois people jump to outrage, and how little that outrage has ever gotten them. Despite what you think might happen in an ideal world, there is not an institution in the nation, public or otherwise, that does not let influential people affect admission. And I sincerely doubt that the effect for a state school that admits in the neighborhood of 8,000 students a year and is only moderately selective is all that significant. I'm sure that in this state there's a lot worse things worth getting upset over.

I really don't understand this too much either. Maybe the clout was used for some of the more selective colleges/majors? Computer Science, for example, is quite competitive since it's typically ranked in the top 10 nationally.

This would never happen at the University of New Mexico. Everyone's a Lobo, Woof Woof Woof!
