Crain's is reporting that President Obama will go to Copenhagen in October to lobby for Chicago 2016's bid. This comes as absolutely no surprise. Crain's cites a report by Olympic website Around the Rings which cites a source within the IOC as saying Obama is coming.

I knew he had to be a Jedi.
I'm guessing that's his lightsaber and that he bought one to play with and one to keep MIB
Thanks Mr. President. So I guess you're fucking the whole south side like you did the folks at Grove Parc Plaza? Y'know the place you made into a ruin through "public-private partnerships" not unlike this Olympics mess. See the pissed off people in that video? That's going to be whole neighborhoods as the eminent domain/2016 machine starts up.
But what do you care? Come 2016 you'll have very very VIP seats, lush accommodations and all the best the Olympics can offer. Fat of the land sir, fat of the land.
Though hopefully you'll be celebrating your fourth year out of office.
Yes, it will be so nice when President Palin welcomes the world to the Jesus Olympics.
Oh please. Is that the only choice now? Obama or some crazy woman who thinks that evolution is just something that happened in the lower 48?
Considering Obama has thus far continued the policies of FAIL on
-The Economy
-Both Wars
-GLBTQ Rights
is he really all that much to crow about? I know voting for him gave so many liberal and progressive types a happy-joy-joy feeling inside, because he was a safe black guy and seemed so darn nice. But he's just another moderate democrat, tied into the same boring power structures. Hope for change, prepare to be disappointed.
No, I just like getting people like you riled up.
You'd have to try a lot harder. I'm not riled, just sad.
So, when the IOC gives the Olympics to Rio, this will make Obama seem...?
That's what makes this surprising to me. He has more to lose by going and then losing the bid than he would by not going and just seeing what happens.
Disgusting. I was equally angry when he and Durbin sent out the letter to Cook County voters imploring them to vote for the Toddler.
Perhaps the president is going because he (1) believes that hosting the Olympics would be good the country; (2) he believes that the Olympics will benefit Chicago in the long run, irrespective of what anyone right now thinks about Mayor Daley, Todd Stroger or the parking meter deal; (3) he previously promised the members of the organizing committee that he would go and is actually going to keep his word; or (4) Michelle and Oprah are making him do it.
1: It won't. Montreal's debt (which was considerably less than Chicago's would be) took 30 years to pay off.
2: Those power structures are going to have immediate and unfettered access to hundreds of millions of new dollars. These are the same power structures that can't keep medical facilities and libraries open and staffed.
3: Aw, he'd disappoint a coalition of millionaires and corporate lickspittles? How will he sleep at night?
4: This may be the only sound reason to do it.

Probably, even if I disagree with the President's thinking on this.
Actually, it would be odd for the President not to go to lobby for a US Games. I just hope he has the pull to throw some fed dollars our way if, indeed, Chicago gets this monster.
And I hope he doesn't run away from the reality that he is helping to enable the inevitable graft by lending his sway to this crap.
It seems like there are a whole bunch of duplicate comments on Chicagoist. Does the system not detect them and only keep one?
Wow, what a shocker. There was never any doubt he was going. As usual, its all about him. He wanted people to wonder whether or not he would show and then at the last second, he would emerge in his Superman outfit to save the day. Wow, what a hero.
The guy basks in adulation to a greater degree than Bubba, in my opinion. Too bad his popularity is declining.

Yeah, it's not like he was busy being president or anything and showing up for a few minutes to push for a once-every-four-years event was probably at the top of his list anyway. Besides, every U.S. president makes a trip to bid for the games in person. Bush Sr. did for Los Angeles and Clinton did for Atlanta and Dubya did for the 2012 bid.
Wait, no they didn't
"Asked repeatedly at a press briefing yesterday why Mr. Bush was not going, Ms. (Condoleeza) Rice and Mr. Bloomberg observed that American presidents have traditionally not gone to the meetings. George H.W. Bush did not and Bill Clinton did not, but the country won the Games anyway."

Anyway, there was never any doubt, right?
