Chicago 2016: Live From Daley Plaza

Hello from downtown Chicago. The festivities have been kicking here for not quite a half an hour or so and the cool weather hasn't dampened the spirits of the large crowd gathered here at a sunny Daley Plaza. We're still a little under an hour away from the start of the IOC's voting. Barring a huge upset, Chicago is expected to make it to the final round of voting, most likely against Rio. That means we won't find out who gets the Games until the official IOC announcement at 11:30 a.m. In the meantime, be sure to keep checking back with this post as we add more pics and updates from the festivities and count down to the big reveal.

9:20 a.m. - Olympian Rowdy Gaines and Ald. Solis (25th) get the crowd warmed up and introduce a series of videos that were shown to the IOC during their April evaluation visit. Gaines says the first round of voting by the IOC starts at 10:10 a.m. Chicago time.

9:50 a.m. - We've seen appearances from Scottie Pippen and Ald. Preckwinkle. A mediocre cover band is on stage now. We await the first round of votes.

10:20 a.m.: Waiting on the first rond of voting.

have you been hunkered down there in the rain with your laptop all night or what!?

A coworker of mine made a really great point that refutes the "international status" reason for wanting the Olympics -- last November, the entire world was watching Grant Park in Chicago as we elected a black man President. We already have international status.

Yeah, no one has ever heard of Chicago. We're a pretty small, quiet town.

Yeah, all those kids with backpacks who talk funny and come here for Lollapalooza and those older people I see walking downtown and on Michigan Ave. speaking German, French, etc. must all be from Elgin.

Chicago isn't actually that well known internationally. The list of American cities abroad is NY, NY, NY, SF, NY, LA, NY. And of course Salt Lake City, as hosting the Olympics put them at global city status.

Actually it is. In a very recent survey, Chicago was in the top 10 among U.S. destination for international travelers. Chicago and Vegas were the only non-costal cities to make the list, which is pretty good considering most of the others were in California and Florida, places with big beaches and ocean views. We're already on the international map.

Wow, that was quick. Back to the grind...

Yeah, I was at least hoping to put off work until after lunch...oh well
