We know Sweet Lou has said he's coming back for 2010, the last year on his contract, but beyond that, what's the future for the Cubs? Hall-of-Famer Ryne Sandberg is making no secret about his desire to coach the Big League team. Sandberg guided the Cubs' AA affiliate to the Southern League championship which would certainly help his resume. As for what awaits him, Sandberg says, "I'm just waiting to see where I'll be headed next year, and to continue to contribute to the organization and gain experience and really enjoy it along the way." I think Sandberg would be a disaster... I'm pulling for Brenly to be the next manager.
I don't know, I think Sandberg has done well everywhere he's managed in the minors and from what I've read he seems to have the fire and drive that reminds one of a younger Lou Piniella.
Plus, being from a more recent generation of players, I think he would do a better job relating to the current players and would know how to handle them unlike Grandpa Lou.
The Cubs can start the Ricketts era by either trying to shrug off this year and get back on the upward trend toward a championship, or they can go back to being a feel-good cellar team the fans like even though they lose. Sellecting Sandberg would indicate they're going for the latter.
And if he gets it, the Cubs once again become a training ground for someone instead of a place that wins championships.
