A Lincoln Square bar owner was found severely beaten in the alley behind his bar early Sunday morning. According to the Chicago Tribune, bar owner Robert Gonzales, 69, stayed behind at O'Lanagan's - located at 2335 W. Montrose Ave. - after closing time at 3:00 a.m. to clean up. Police found him in the alley less than two hours later after the burglar alarm at the business had been tripped. Gonzales was brought to the hospital, where he died Sunday evening after suffering severe lacerations to his head.

Bar regulars said Saturday night was a quiet night at the decades-old bar - there were about eight customers the whole night - and that Gonzales - remembered by friends and bar patrons as friendly - often stayed late to clean up. Police said it was unclear whether the owner had been robbed, and they weren't sure of the weapon used in the attack or a motive.

This is not far from where the owner of a gas station was killed when leaving work very late at night (or perhaps leaving home to go to work very early in the morning, I don't remember which it was). The Shell at Montrose and Western, sometime in the last year, I think.

my running groups uses this bar quite often and we had a great relationship with bobby. he will be truly missed.
