Paul Kahan's beer and tacos joint in the old Pontiac Café space now has a name. Big Star is set to open in the next month or so. Big Star is largely influenced by Depression-era Bakersfield, California. that means there's gonna be a lot of Dust Bowl country music, Merle Haggard and Buck Owens being spun by Danny's Tavern and Reckless Records.
Kahan's menu of tacos and Mexican street fare will be implemented by avec's Justin Large with a bar menu under the direction of Michael Rubel from the Violet Hour. Tacos, beer and country music? Sounds like any night at our house.

The Big Star country music inference is so terribly wrong. "...influenced by Depression-era Bakersfield, California"?
Please consult with your music writers.
Replace "country music" with highly influential power-pop and you should do just fine.
I believe when Chuck says "influenced" he's talking about the restaurant folk, not the Memphis band.
haha. the restaurant is CALLED Big Star. haha. My mistake. This makes sense. I read Big Star and thought the band Big Star was playing for the opening.
No harm, no foul. We are, however, waiting for comment from Kahan's partner Terry Alexander about whether the name was influenced by Alex Chilton, Chris Bell, et al.
Please tell me they will still make use of the patio. (At least for when it warms up in 7 months.)
I await the airing of the pricelist. I love Avec, Violet Hour and any number of the other similar, well-done spots dotted across the city, but let's face it, Pontiac was charming bc it was a dirt-cheap place to hang out for hours on end on a warm afternoon. It wasn't a concept or even a destination, but for ten bucks you got a blank slate for creating summer's best memories.
I heard it was supposed to be super cheap, like dollar tacos.
Well in that case, provided it has a patio, I anticipate its opening!
I think the taco price point they were aiming for was around $1.75, and Terry wants to have at least one buck beer on the menu so that's a good sign too!
I, for one, will miss live band karaoke. As much as it sucked, it was awesome.
On behalf of the organization, you're welcome.
