HOB Guard Arrested For Assaulting Picture Taker

A quick head's up: the language in the below video is NSFW.

Our pals at Gapers Block have pointed us to some stunning video that's been making the rounds this week: a security guard at the House of Blues assaults a young woman for allegedly taking his picture. The incident took place after Monday night's Hanson show at the HOB and blogger Carlos Miller has more on what happened, including reports from a witness that claims the girl wasn't taking a picture of the man at all. Of course, taking a picture of someone in a public place isn't illegal, just a matter of courtesy if they don't wish to be photographed.

Late yesterday afternoon, NBC 5 reported that the guard, Darrell Gibson, 31, of Sauk Village, had been arrested and charged with misdemeanor battery.

Police would not confirm that Gibson worked for the House of Blues, but a spokesperson for the venue said that "an incident occurred on Monday night outside House of Blues involving an individual and a security guard" and that the venue would "cooperate fully with the authorities."

Gibson and two other HOB employees that were involved in the fracas were suspended. Live Nation issued a statement, saying:

"An incident occurred on Monday night outside House of Blues involving an individual and a security guard. We take our responsibility to maintain the safety of both our patrons and the artists who play at the House of Blues very seriously. We are looking into the incident and will cooperate fully with the authorities."

The HOB was recently sued by another woman claiming she was unnecessarily roughed up by security guards.

wow, that was completely uncalled for.

what was he thinking? he pushed her to the ground at least twice, and possibly punched her. what happened to the video about 1/2 way through...?

Judging from the audio going interrupted, it sounds like another guard grabbed the video camera halfway through, but didn't shut it off.

you're right - according to the link in the post, another guard took the camera but didn't turn it off.

they also mentioned that the guards said they were "off duty" and "could do whatever they want."

i always thought security guards were jobs for people who couldn't cut it as cops or just wanted to be brutes.

they also mentioned that the guards said they were "off duty" and "could do whatever they want."

Off duty? So they weren't acting in any "official" capacity?

Well, thanks for the confession to basic street assault, guys. Hopefully the next door you'll be guarding will be the ones on your own jail cells.

I'm guessing this is just a viral video campaign to advertise the upcoming name change: "The House of Black and Blues."

I've never had a good experience with HOB security. Nothing awful like this, but they are among the rudest in the city afflicted with a gross case of self-importance. They also have a real bad camera phobia.

It's a great sounding venue and everything but dealing with the staff makes it a place I never want to go back to.

Just ... WOW! As the girl kept asking, WTF?!!!

I agree that this was a horrible situation and the guard was out of line.

What's unfortunate though, is that in IL it's illegal to record audio of someone without their consent. Taking pictures is OK, I belive, but not audio. I do think this law should be changed as it applies to police or security guards (they should have no problem with being recorded by citizens because police have too much power to abuse people, and if the police aren't doing anything wrong, they should have no problem with being under surveillance when they're in an official capacity).

Are you sure about that? I don't think that applies if you're recording audio in the middle of a public street.

Not true. Cameras are not considered eavesdropping or wiretapping devices, and besides, there is no expectation of privacy on a public street/sidewalk.

I'm not referring to the camera that was seized. I'm referring to the video/audio posted to this page.

Whether its legal or not to record someone, its definitely not legal to assault anyone. Anyone. A "security guard" on public property has no authority at all to confiscate anything from anybody.

This is horrible. It seems to me there is almost and edict from HofB that there security is to be the biggest jerks around. They routinely treat you as a terrorist when you are actually a patron being made for a fool by paying outrageous prices.

It is a shame because it is hands down the best sounding room in town, and its set up perfectly as well. Great flow to the bars, bathrooms etc.... Easy to get up close, a table whatever. But more often than not I decide not to attend shows there because of the hassle their security is and the ridiculous prices.

Funny thing is though I have been to the ones in Boston, Vegas, LA & NOLA, and none of them treat people the way they do at the one in Chicago. Sad.
