Windy City Rollers Bound Into Home Finale

2009_10_16_WCR.jpg It's a bittersweet weekend for the Windy City Rollers. A big bout with the Wheels of Justice, Portland's Rose City Rollers all-star team, awaits this weekend and National's are just around the corner. But it's also the last home bout of the 2009 season for the WCR and we'll have to wait a few months to see them take to the track once more. Don't worry, though, there's still plenty of time to get in on the fun, starting with the bout on Saturday. The fun starts at 5:40 p.m. when the Roller's B squad, The Second Wind, matches up against some neighbors to the north, Milwaukee's Brew City Bruisers travel team; the main event gets underway at 7 p.m.

But the fun won't stop there. We all know Halloween is just a few weeks away and you can skate & celebrate with the Rollers. On October 24, the Rollers will host a Halloween Party at Orbit Skate Center in Palatine. While costumes aren't required, they are encouraged and it'll be a kid-friendly celebration.

And, finally, do you want to take a shot at joining the Rollers on the track? Tryouts for the league's 2010 season will be held November 7. If you hit up Saturday's bout, various Rollers will be available at halftime to answer questions and talk with you about the league and tryouts. You can also shoot an email to tryout(at)windycityrollers(dot)com for more information.

For you roller derby fans, check out the movie "Whip It," which is in some theaters now.

"Whip It" centers on the roller derby scene in Austin, Texas. It's not great but it's acceptable, with plenty of roller derby action.

i can't find the link right away, but the WCR's sang the 7th inning stretch with drew barrymore, "whip it"'s director, at a cubs game this season.

Had a great time at the derby on saturday. If you like heckling and beer then this is your place!
