On Saturday night around 10:30 p.m., officers from the Targeted Response Unit were on patrol in the 8200 block of South Marquette Avenue, an area notorious for ongoing drug and gang activity. Officers noticed a man standing on a porch holding a weapon, according to a police statement. As the officers exited their vehicle and ordered the 41-year-old man to drop his weapon, he allegedly attempted to shoot them twice, before trying to run away.

Returning fire, officers struck the man, even as he continued to run. The man then attempted to shoot the police again, firing his gun from behind his back while running away, police said to the Chicago Sun Times. The officers fired at the man again, hitting him multiple times. He collapsed and was taken into custody and transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. A weapon was recovered on the scene. According to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Quention Curtis, the man is in critical condition after being shot in his leg and back. Police said his condition was "stable" early Sunday.

Ilana Rosenzweig, the spokeswoman for the Independent Police Review Authority, said to the Sun Times that the agency is still investigating the shooting and at this time, there is no further information available. No charges were filed as of 4:30 a.m. on Sunday. Calumet Area detectives are still investigating as well.
