Today's Moment of Culinary Snuff: Wiener and Still Champion's "Big Dipper"

2009_10_big_dipper.jpg

Last week we attended a preview of the new menu items at Wiener and Still Champion (802 Dempster, Evanston, 847-869-0100). Many of the new additions are former off-menu items owner Gus Paschalis would serve to frequent customers; the country fried gyros were one such item. But nothing prepared us for the phallic monstrosity pictured above.

That is called the "Big Dipper," aka the "Ed Fisher" after a LTHForum regular. That is a 10-inch, hand-dipped corn dog. It's majestic, turgid, firm and every bit worth its $6.50 list price. Another new dish at WaSC worth ordering is deep-fried chili. It isn't as gross as it sounds. It's actually like an arrancini, only instead of rice you get a molten center of chili.

Paschalis is doing the Lord's Work mere steps from the Purple Line Dempster station.

Gus is good people. I gotta say though, call ahead if you can, the wait can be kind of dire.

The country-fried bacon is still the pinnacle of all things fried.
