Even though property values are down, property tax bills are going up. In the city, property tax bills will see an increase by an average of six percent while the increase in the suburbs of Cook County will see an average increase of four percent. [ABC 7]

Friday Afternoon Diversion: Earth With Rings

I am shocked. Can't they just sell of more assets or create new fees? How about taxing air?
MM, nice to see you again.
Marcus, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that tax rates were staying where they are, but that property assessments were going up; meaning that the overall collected property taxes would increase. Or did I hear wrong?
You know, I think you're right. that was my mistake. Here's the Trib story on it. my mistake in using "rate" instead of "bills." thanks for pointing that out.
In the late 1990s, there was this segment on Chicago Tonight that featured PhD-level economists from the better local universities, and perhaps other experts, and the whole point was that they could barely explain the complicated state and local property tax system, which is complex on purpose (the less clarity the proles have, the better it is for the ruling class). It was an amusing segment.
It's rather like credit card rules.
Ahhhh so Chicagoist is finally trying to shed some light on the County Gov., besides blaming every thing on Dark Stroger? Maybe next time you could actually mention the separately elected cabal( sorry I mean officials) responsible for appeals and assessments.
Todd Stroger is a symptom of a badly diseased system, Spook. We can't blame him for everything, but he's got a lot of it coming.
Todd Stroger does very little good for working families in Cook County, especially African Americans. Part of standing up for people means calling out the pie cards, especially when they're using their own people as cover.
