Save Chicago's Free Music

Remember all those cuts we talked about a few weeks back? Several of them involved some of the FREE music festivals and events we love about the city. Now, the Friends of Chicago Music are fighting back with a petition to help save those programs from being cut as the City Council tries to hash out Mayor Daley's 2010 budget plan. Swing by and sign it today. [via Pitchfork]

I think this petition drive is a great idea, but it would be wonderful if organizers of such drivers actually provided evidence of giving at least a moment's thought to how the city should pay to maintain its many wonderful festivals.

Yes, there is much abuse and waste, but the city is broke, broke, broke, and probably would be close to broke even if Daley were as honest as an Eagle Scout and as wise as an Indian warrior. That is the reality. Hoping for a heat wave in January is hardly realistic planning on anyone's part.

Yes, I understand that getting a shitload of signatures can make some leaders think twice about cuts--squeaky wheels do get greased--but where are the creative solutions from such groups?
