O'Hare, Midway Not Part Of Google's Free Wi-Fi Plans

2009_11_google.jpg Mega tech-company Google is giving the people what they want: free wi-fi at airports across the nation. Unfortunately for Chicago, where Google coincidentally has an office, neither of our city's airports will be offering the free wi-fi, instead sticking with their current pay-as-you-go wi-fi setup. But take heart, weary travelers: FOX 32 has a full list of the 47 airports around the country that are getting in on the free action, so as you head off to destinations far-and-wide this holiday season, at least you know you can view this site for free while stuck in a layover in Kalamazoo (we can hear you all breathing sighs of relief from our office).

So you can get free wi-fi in K-Zoo but not Chicago... Yeah, Daley, how's that "world class city" going for you?

Sidenote: Those Boingo a-holes own me nine bucks. Signed up at an airport and it wouldn't let me log on to use the service, but they charged me anyway.

well to be fair, i don't see any other major airports either.

Why is it that smaller businesses/institutions are the ones that always offer free wireless? Holiday Inn, free wireless. Hilton - you've got to pay. Kalamazoo - hotspot. O'Hare - not so much. Starbucks - gotta pay. My local coffee shop? Totally free.

That's an interesting question, though it's not the size of the hotel, it's generally the "class". You can probably get free wi-fi at Hampton Inn, which is owned by Hilton. And I was just at an Intercontinental Hotel which did not have free Internet, but Intercontinental is owned by the same company as Holiday Inn.

I've been to 12 of those airports in my life, and I'll be in 2 of them during the free period.

By the way, this is "a free for the holidays" thing, until Jan 15. Not permanent. I can see why larger airports with established for-pay wi-fi wouldn't want to (or contractually be able to) do this for just a couple months.

Ha guess that's what I was trying to say...and choosing my words a little too carefully I suppose. But yes, it's definitely a class/quality thing. Even the Hyatt Places have internet, while regular Hyatts don't...

Um, obviously major airports are too big to be included right now. JFK, LAX, ORD and ATL aren't included.
