Nate Expectations

Oprah Winfrey’s production company is proposing a new daytime talk show featuring Chicago interior designer and decorator Nate Berkus, which means he’s poised to join Dr. Phil, Rachael Ray, and Dr. Oz as the newest member of the ‘I was a regular Oprah guest and now I have my own show’ clique. The as-yet-titled show is slated for 2010 and would be the second collaboration between Harpo Productions and its distributor, Sony Pictures Television. Their first collaboration, "The Dr. Oz Show" premiered earlier this year and had the best first-run talk show debut in seven years, according to Broadcasting & Cable.

The project fuels rumors that if Winfrey does continue her daily syndicated talk show beyond 2011, and decides not to shift it over to her newly formed Oprah Winfrey Network, it could be distributed by Sony instead of CBS.

In 2001 Berkus was invited to make over a small space for "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and from there he became a featured expert for the show. Today Berkus hosts his own radio show, "The Nate Berkus Show," on XM’s ‘Oprah & Friends’ channel where he chats each week with callers, celebrities, and in-studio guests. Last year, Berkus hit primetime as the host of ABC’s reality series "Oprah's Big Give," but this year it’s the celebrity designer that’s on the receiving end of things. We’d call that a real twist of Nate.

Thats pretty cool actually- way to go for Chicago area people.

You know he designed Rockit Bar & Grill amongst other things?

It is inevitable that at some point in the next few hours, somebody will come along and talk about how Berkus is a sell-out and and Oprah is fat, so they all might as well take themselves to California and jump off the Santa Monica pier, or something like that. I've decided that one of the defining characteristics of Chicago people is that we absolutely hate it when one of our people succeeds. As somebody else said on one of these discussions, Chicago eats its own.

I say go Nate.

Haters hating isn't exclusive to Chicago, BlueFairlane.

This being the internet people are going to spew all sorts of vitriol while accomplishing nothing regardless of the topic.

"Haters hating isn't exclusive to Chicago, BlueFairlane."

Were this something I'd only seen Chicago people do on the internet, I'd agree with you. But I hear tons of people hating on Oprah and Co.--or virtually any other successful Chicagoan, for that matter--in the streets, too.

People loved Oprah in the beginning. She was a breath of fresh air, down to earth and all that. People hate her holier than thou attitude now. The money and success seem to have gone to her head. It's like she's forgotten her past.
Have you ever read her magazine? Her 'favorite things" or whatever it's called section..about products she highly recommends for us? Lotions that cost $300. I mean, c'mon. How out of reach is this for most Americans?
I wouldn't spend $300 on a bottle of lotion even if my income were in the 7 figure a year range. I mean, what's in it? The foreskin of baby Jesus?
She's developed a messiah complex, so I don't think it really has anything to do with sour grapes over a home girl making it big, it has more to do with her attitude now. It's almost like she acts as if she can lay hands on the dead and they'll come back to life.

The thing is, though, I rarely see that reaction to her outside the city. My family, for instance, absolutely adores the woman. People in my hometown worship her and immediately run out to the Wal-mart to buy whatever her favorite things happen to be. Friends I have in other parts of the nation, even in other cities, say the same thing. Oprah is a supreme goddess every place but where she lives.

Maybe you're right. I guess I've just been in Chicago too long and don't every really talk about Oprah to my out of town friends.
But, did Chicagoans feel this way about Oprah when she first started out? I've only been here around 10 years...so how did you all feel about her way back when she was really fat and had bad makeup and was 'every woman'?

The thing is, though, I rarely see that reaction to her outside the city. My family, for instance, absolutely adores the woman.

Maybe because they are inundated with news of her in the papers and on TV. Oprah shuts down a street for a few days. Oprah ate here. There was a car accident...it was a mere five miles from Harpo studios. Seriously, I think we hear a lot more about her day to day doings that most other people. It gets old. It's sorta like hearing about that Billy Dec guy. I've never seen him in person, never crossed paths with him, but I hate him.

Maybe because they are inundated with news of her in the papers and on TV.

Actually, that should read "maybe they AREN'T inundated..." but you probably figured that out.

I think it has more to do with just the sheer power and popularity of Oprah and how those around her go along for the ride. I have nothing against Nate at all. He's enthusiastic and camera-ready. I remember seeing him on Check Please! once. But how in the holy hell did Dr. Phil ever get on that train? And Dr. Oz? Really? Is it because the giggling members of the audience all want to do him? If Oprah was in New York or L.A., people in those cities would say the same things. I personally am bothered less by Oprah than I am by whatever values we as Americans have that makes someone like her so unbelievably rich to begin with.

I don't see a lot of ire for these people from most Chicagoans:

John Cusack
Roger Ebert
Bill Murray
Gary Sinise
Bernie Mac
John Hughes
Bonnie Hunt
Laurie Metcalf
Steve Albini
Studs

The 'famous' people associated with Chicago that Chicagoans tend to hate have either a cheese, politics or obnoxiousness factor involved:

Richard Marx
Jerry Springer
Kanye
Louis Farrakhan
Charlie Trotter
Jessie Jackson Jr.
Jim DeRogatis
Thax

Oh, you and your darned examples proving the baselessness of my statement! We're talking about Oprah. OPRAH!!!

Mikey, how in the world could you leave Jim Belushi off that "hate" list. Also R. Kelly (though, depending on whom you speak to that's either a love him or hate him thing).

And Cusak gets his share of ire for jumping on the White Sox bandwagon in 2005 after wearing his Cub fandom on his sleeve for so many years. I believe there's a story out there of Reinsdorf turing him down for World Series tickets because of that very reason.

If this is true, it is totally awesome.

Here's the story as told on the White Sox on website.

Cusack and Reinsdorf

It makes him sounds like an even bigger bandwagon jumping d-bag.

Please add Piven to the hate list.

I'd also include the President to the 'hate' list. Remember, according to Rush Limbaugh, the President, Rahm Emmanuel and Valerie Jarrett are just "Chicago Thugs", so there are likely a small handful of lunatics throughout the country who hate this city because it spawned and nurtured Barack The Great Antichrist.

Go Bears!

I'm all for having more of this man on the tv. He's cute, he's talented, and I hear that he is a very nice person as well.

I thought this guy lived in New York anyway. Maybe I imagined it, but I seem to remember him being on tv doing the makeover/decorating thing on a little lofty space he'd bought there.
