NYT Preps For Chicago Edition

2009_11_19_NYT.jpg Media junkies of Chicago, get ready. Tomorrow, the first edition of the New York Times featuring the Chicago-centric section (well, two pages, anyway) produced by the newly-formed Chicago News Cooperative will hit newsstands. The CNC will provide the Chicago content for the local edition, which will appear on Fridays and Sundays. Since the initial announcement, the CNC, already heavy on former Tribune folks, managed to poach a few other Tribune writers, including City Hall reporter Dan Mihalopoulos. In the words of Gawker, "New York Times Hires Gang Who Killed Chicago Tribune to Kill Tribune.” However, Gawker also insists that "The Times has always had a very good foothold in Chicago because there is no local alternative for the sort of people who read the Times--curious, smart, and not invested in Chicago's bottomless Second City status anxiety."

The Times offers its "Weekender" package - which would include both Chicago editions - for $5.70 a week. Is it worth it? See for yourself; just don't forget about us here at Chicagoist. [h/t TOC for the reminder]

Honestly, the Times is 70% useless if you don't live in New York. They do some good news and all that, but the vast majority of the paper would be boring to anyone who isn't concerned with New York minutiae.

Well that's probably down to about 65% useless considering the Chicago content now. I suppose that's the whole point: to see if these 2 pages are enough to draw in the casual Chicago reader. I'll admit I'm going to buy it this weekend just to see how it looks.

Gillie what the crunch yo!

Have you got bitten by these zombies?
Have you forgotten your heritage? You come from aTimes-Picayune culture that sharpen the pens of the likes of Faulkner and O. Henry! That produced almost more Pulitzers than your average fat Chicagoan can eat hot dogs, with ten spoon full of onions per dog.

If the intention IS to draw in the casual Chicago reader, then they'd
better use bright orange crayon print for content written at the 5th grade level.

Seriously, they're gonna kill one of my major daily life lines to the world, by trying to placate Chicago's growing ever population of Red Eye Readers and Da Bears- Da Bulls- Da Cubs
fans.

You know its true Gilmer!

Don't live me hang'n

Oh, Spook, you know I love me some Times-Pic. some of the best feature writing in the country. They did a brilliant series on the cycle of violence, they called the levee troubled that Katrina wrought (three years before it happened), and a legion of other good writers. Not sure how it is now, though, since I've been gone for a few years. But don't get me started on Chris Rose.

Hey Towie! Hi ya doing buddy!

I guess that's why the NYT Times is considered an international paper? Not just because of its news, but its arts and style section too.

You do understand that you represent the stupidity of the midwest, don' you? Why don't you pick up todays NYT paper and tell me how much NY minutia is there? Just under a page! I am shocked that you would comment on something that you clearly know nothing about. Well then again, how midwestern of you!

Shame on you Sir!

Spook: lol. I live in Brooklyn.

love the times. great international and national secion. In fact, their metro section for nyc itself kind of sucks.

It's a refreshing and worldy newspaper to the trib's ultra-suburban voice that it has cultivated over the years. This is at its worst when they run front page covers of suburban HS drinking parties. The horror!
