Billy Corgan Releases New "Smashing Pumpkins" Song

Billy Corgan claimed he'd be releasing the songs fast and furious starting around Halloween for the new Smashing Pumpkins -- well, what he's calling The Smashing Pumpkins -- album Teargarden by Kaleidyscope. We lauded this move originally, especially since it was going to be available for free, which is what anyone should be expected to pay for anything Corgan puts out in recent years.
So here we are, two months after this project was supposed to kick off, and the first track finally eeks its way out, not for free download but as a stream on AOL's Spinner. Lame. You know what's not lame though? The song itself.
"A Song For A Son" may be based lyrically skittish ground. Corgan told Spinner, "It's got something to do about not having any kids and thinking about why I don't have any kids," But we have to admit that it's also the first listenable thing the man's done in years. Dry production rooted in a classic rock construct instead of an attempt at mid-'90s bombast actually, imagine this, helps the song!
Give it a listen and cross your fingers in hopes that a) Corgan continues writing in this vein and b) he does us all a favor and drops the Pumpkins moniker once and for all.
UPDATE: The song will be available for download off The Smashing Pumpkins site starting at midnight tonight.
