Bourbon is the fuel that turns the Chicagoist engine, but coffee is the primer. Today is National Gourmet Coffee Day and we decided to take a very (un)scientific poll of the staff to see if their favorite coffee houses have changed since the last time we paid homage to our favorite java castles.

  • Marcus: "The Grind (4613 N. Lincoln, 773-271-4482) is my new favorite."
  • Veronica Murtaugh: "I love Intelligentsia's Broadway location (3123 N. Broadway, 773-348-8058) and Lovely Bake Shop, which has a full service espresso bar." (1130 N. Milwaukee, 773-572-4766)
  • Karl: "Beans & Bagels Lincoln Square location (2601 N. Leland, 773-649-0015), home of the Smoking Winchester."
  • Joe Erbentraut: "The Perfect Cup (4700 N. Damen, 773-989-4177) has a super friendly staff and good ambiance. Kitchen Sink, formerly in the Pause Café space (1107 W. Berwyn) is recently remodeled - very pretty interior. It's more ambitious than before with a great ambiance and friendly staff."
  • Anthony: "My favorite, hands down, is Julius Mienl's shop on Southport (3601 N. Southport, 773-868-1857). Best food selection, good atmosphere, things come on shiny trays. The only problem is the service is slow. Plus, nice low-key live music on weekends. "
  • Laura Browning: "I love the Coffee Studio in Andersonville (5628 N Clark, 773-271-7881). Decor is warm (lots of wood) but minimalist (lovely clean lines) with art/posters provided by Threadless. They do delicious things with Intelligentsia coffee -- the dolce latte is perfectly sweetened and may well contain bits of angels' wings. It's a good place to get work done, though you might feel out of place if you don't have a MacBook. "
