Remy Bumppo's Short Film Contest

2010_1_25island.jpg Brevity is the soul of wit--and of profundity too. That's why, in our book, Night and Fog is a hundred times more powerful than Schindler's List. If you've got what it takes to create a powerful video 3-5 minutes long about civil disobedience, the effects of social injustice, or faith in solidarity, Remy Bumppo wants to see it.

The contest runs in conjunction with their production of Athol Fugard's play The Island, a powerful story set during apartheid in an unnamed prison. It opens Wednesday and runs through March 7. Finalists in the contest will be screened at a special event on March 1 at Lincoln Hall, and the winning video will be played in the lobby of the Greenhouse Theater during the play's run and also on Remy Bumppo's site. But hurry, the deadline is February 1.

Of course, brevity isn't everything. The Island is only one of the plays being presented in a mini-festival of the South African playwright's works. Also in the lineup are Timeline's 'Master Harold' ... And The Boys and Court Theatre's Sizwe Banzi is Dead. Fugard's themes of maintaining dignity amidst powerlessness are surely as timely as ever.
