Photo via United States Census 2010 Chicagoans need to step up when it comes to returning their census forms. Nationally, almost 50 percent of homes have usually mailed in their forms by this time but so far, only 36 percent of Chicagoans have returned their forms. A lag in mailing back those forms could end up costing taxpayers millions. Census Bureau Director Robert Groves said via press release “Every household that fails to send back their census form by mail must be visited by a census taker starting in May - at a significant taxpayer cost.”
According to the release, every percentage point increase in mailed responses will save an estimated $85 million in federal funds. After the 2000 Census, the Bureau returned $305 million in savings to the federal Treasury. You can track the response in your neighborhood here.
