Backyard Botanist: Checking Up on the Tobacco Plants

Because we sowed the seed by sprinkling it on the soil and then watering it in, in some of the cells of the flat, we’ve had to weed out all but the best and most robust looking tobacco plants.

This leaves room for the plants that we did leave growing in the flat cells to take root and grow as much as possible before we transfer them to larger pots

Just a week after weeding the flats, and the tobacco seedlings look bigger and healthier already! In another week or so, they’ll be ready to be repotted in larger containers.

It's been a month since we first planted our tobacco plants, and though the last frost is still a few weeks away, our crops are doing pretty good. The method we used to plant the seeds - sprinkling them over the soil and watering them in - worked well, but the unintended side effect is that we had an over abundance of plants when they first sprouted. That was resolved with some selective weeding.

At this point, there isn't much to do, except keep them watered, warm in in plenty of sunlight. We'll pot them soon, so until then, stay tuned, and happy gardening!
