Chicago-based Maps & Atlases have only released two EPs worth of fractured, bouncily melodious math-pop, but their presence as one of the city’s most musically capable bands is well established. Barsuk Records, former home of Death Cab For Cutie, seem to agree, as they’re releasing the quartet’s debut full-length, Perch Patchwork, on June 29. To give listeners a taste of the 12-track feast to come, both band and label have released “Solid Ground” as Patchwork’s first single. Already, the titular word “Patchwork” becomes incredibly apt—the song capably juggles mellotron, Afro-tinged rhythms and slide guitar into a delectable indie-pop package.
