Another Fish Kill, Still No Carp

By Marcus Gilmer in News on May 25, 2010 4:30PM

Today's the last day of a five-day fish kill on a two-mile segment of the Little Calumet River aimed at locating any Asian Carp that may be lurking in the river. Even though Asian Carp have never been found in the river, tests have turned up that fish's DNA on occasion. But so far, while over 100,000 fish accounting for nearly 40 different species have been killed, none have been identified as Asian Carp. Last year's similar fish kill of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal near Romeoville resulted in just one carp being found. Wildlife officials dumped a ton (literally) of the fish poison Rotenone into the waterway near south suburban Dolton on Thursday. The floating fish will be netted and examined to see if carp are among the dead and then disposed of at a nearby landfill.
