Afternoon Box Score: Sox Hold Off Indians

The White Sox seemed to have a victory locked down but had to do everything they could to hold off a big ninth inning rally from the Indians as the Sox beat Cleveland 5-4 this afternoon. Things got heated in more ways than one on the field; in the second inning, Ozzie Guillen was ejected for arguing a balk call on starter Mark Buehrle and then Buehrle himself was booted arguing a second balk call in the third inning. Still, the Sox got enough offense to get the win. Paul Konerko singled in a run and then Mark Teahen hit a two-run single, both in the fourth, to give the Sox an early 3-0 lead. Then Mark Kotsay belted a two-run homer in the sixth to give the Sox a big 5-1 lead. But it almost unraveled in the ninth when reliever Bobby Jenks loaded the bases on the first three batters of the inning. After a bases loaded walk sent in a free run, Jenks gave up another single that allowed two more, cutting the lead to 5-4. But with the bases loaded and one out, Jenks managed to get out of the jam, striking out one Indian and getting another to pop out to hold on for the victory. The Sox take the series two games to one, winners of four of their last six. And considering this alleged autograph by Ozzie for a Cleveland fan, maybe it's a good thing the Sox are getting out of town and heading to Tampa to open up a four-game weekend series tomorrow night (6:10 p.m., CSN).
