2010_05_28_lazerproof.JPG Summer is the season of the mixtape, and though we're in the waning days of Spring, it doesn't hurt to get a head start so you can impress friends with your state-of-the-art, impeccable music tastes. Diplo, an indie icon in his own right, knows a thing or two about staying ahead of the music curve, this time putting together a mixtape with Major Lazer bandmate Switch and the most remixable woman in music, La Roux. The brainchild is Lazerproof and it's the perfect soundtrack to your Memorial Day weekend.

Like any other Diplo-produced mixtape, the work is eclectic, inspired by a wealth of genres that range from the mainstream to the completely obscure. Mad Decent, Diplo's label, describes Lazerproof as featuring "a bunch of JA-inspired blends, special remixes, dubplates and more". The spectrum here is nearly exhausted, as Lazerproof touches on sounds from all over the world. What's more is that these sounds are accompanied by La Roux, whose voice has graced enough remixes to keep us bumping until the year 3000. This artistic marriage creates a flow in Lazerproof that is seamless yet distinct. Whether it's the Jamaican flavor of "Colourless Artibella", the Southern rap feel of "I'm Not Your Lemonade", or the straight abrasive dubstep sound in "Tigerlily", the array of sounds coming together as one is a microcosm of Diplo and Switch's professional lives. What kick-ass lives they lead.
