Daley appointed del Valle to the the City Clerk post in 2006 after then-City Clerk James Laski was convicted of bribery and obstruction of justice in the Hired Trucks scandal. Del Valle served as a state senator prior to his seat in the city, and is known as an independent in Chicago, having served under Harold Washington as the city’s first chairman of the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Latino Affairs.

Rich Miller at Capitol Fax notes that del Valle has less than $1,000 in his coffers, although he has "reportedly told friends that he will quickly ramp up." Miller says that del Valle apparently hopes to have petitions on the street this weekend.
