Sable sommelier Emily Wines training for her battle.
Between Head Bartender Mike Ryan and Master Sommelier Emily Wines, Sable Kitchen & Bar knows both the perfect whiskey and wine to pair with the food of chef Heather Terhune. But who knows best?

Ryan and Wines are going to settle the good-natured score with a four-course interactive whiskey and wine dinner on October 14. It should bring out the best in both Ryan (who cut his teeth at the Violet Hour before moving to Sable) and Wines (one of only 17 women to earn the Master Sommelier designation and the second to earn the Remi Krug Cup for passing all three portions of the exam).

At the end of the dinner, both the audience and a three-person expert judges panel will award a winner; I'm one of the judges.

"Bottle Battle: Whiskey v. Wines" at Sable Kitchen & Bar, Hotel Palomar Chicago, 505 N. State St., Ovtober 14, 6:30-8:30 p.m.. Cost is $50. RSVP to 312-755-9704.
