Dan Deacon and Lightning Bolt Headed Our Way

By Sarah Cobarrubias in Arts & Entertainment on Sep 30, 2010 5:40PM

This October, synth scholar Dan Deacon and noise-rock duo Lightning Bolt will team up for a short tour, making stops at seven select locations across North America - and Chicago is one of them. These mavens of synth will perform outdoors at the Illinois Centennial Monument in Logan Square on Sunday, October 10 at 3:30 p.m.

While Deacon usually performs solo, for this tour he’s bringing along a ensemble composed of 11+ musicians, much like the ensemble he brought along for his Bromst tour in 2009. With a troupe of musicians backing him up, Deacon’s music takes on a fuller and more human sound than prerecorded instrumentation, and he’s even written his pieces to accommodate multiple musicians.

Both Deacon and Lightning Bolt are known for their intense, interactive live shows, usually performing their sets at floor level surrounded by fans and breaking the boundary between performer and audience. But with a mass of musicians working beside him (and a herniated disc that caused him to cut his last tour short), Deacon may find himself confined to the stage this time around. Either way, this show is going to be a ridiculously entertaining experience, and at $5 a ticket, there’s really no reason to pass it up.

Dan Deacon plays Sunday, October 10 at the Illinois Centennial Monument, 2595 N Milwaukee, 3:30 p.m., $5, All Ages
