CPS, Whittier Parents Reach Deal
The Chicago Public School System and the parents who've been protesting the proposed razing of the Whittier Elementary School fieldhouse in Pilsen have agreed in principle to a deal that could end the sit-in.
Under the deal, the parents who've organized the sit-in will form a non-profit corporation so that they can take over the fieldhouse and make improvements on it, while the school works to find another location for the library the parents wanted the fieldhouse converted into.
Once a code compliance analysis is completed on the fieldhouse, TIF funds that were originally earmarked to demolish the building will instead be used to renovate it. Still, the parents are not stopping the sit-in until they get everything in writing.
