A damper was placed on yesterday's Bears game as a man died after falling 35 feet from a balcony at Soldier Field to a building outside the stadium. 23-year-old Stuart Haverty of Woodstock, a skilled climber who enjoyed scaling buildings and trees, apparently hopped over a railing to smoke between two of Soldier Field's columns around 5 p.m. Haverty fell from a balcony between the columns to a rooftop 35 feet below. A fire department basket was required to get Haverty off the roof.

The balcony Haverty fell from was about two-feet wide and rumors circulated during the game that Haverty took a running leap from the stadium. Those rumors were quickly refuted by relatives, saying that Haverty was "a happy kid" who would not have hurt himself
