According to Mr. Cavarretta's grandson, Jeffrey Brown, he died from complications related to a stroke he suffered several days before in a hospice care center. Mr. Cavarretta was also suffering from lukemia.
Mr. Cavarretta came up with the Cubs in 1934 and spent 20 of his 22 seasons with the Cubs (the last two were with the White Sox). He led the National League with a .355 batting average and a .449 on-base percentage in his MVP winning 1945 season, the last year the Cubs won a league pennant.
