Pencil This In: Winter Solstice Lunar Eclipse

By Chuck Sudo in News on Dec 20, 2010 10:00PM

Here's a reason to stay up until 2 a.m.: We're expecting a full lunar eclipse around 1:40 a.m. Tuesday.

A total lunar eclipse that occurs on the winter solstice is more rare than Halley's Comet passing Earth; the next one won't happen for another 84 years. If the weather cooperates (and the forecast indicates it might not), those of us awake around that time should be able to view the eclipse in all its glory.
