Architecture Constructs Two New Songs

By Sarah Cobarrubias in Arts & Entertainment on Jan 25, 2011 6:20PM

In late 2009, the lovely ladies of local dream-pop band Panda Riot -- Melissa Harris and Rebecca Scott -- started their own side project, architecture. Soon after they dropped a couple songs (including a cover of R. Kelly’s “Pregnant”) and announced that their debut EP would be released “soonish.” But 2009 was a long time ago, and we’d pretty much forgotten all about it until last week when they released two more tracks, “In the Morning” and “Tomorrow.”

With architecture, Harris and Scott move away from the electro-pop of Panda Riot and toward experimental folk. “In the Morning” has the feel of a traditional English folk song, featuring a delicate though constant melody and haunting choral vocals, backed by stark drumming, plucked guitar, and a little woodwind. This same delicacy is found in “Tomorrow,” a charmingly simple pop melody about youth and reflection, delivering lyrics like “It was only a contradiction that you could not resolve. A paradox of a great proportion was written on the wall. That was when we were young”

You can download both songs for free on their Soundcloud page, where you can also pick up a couple of their older tracks. “In the Morning” and “Tomorrow” will be part of the upcoming EP, which they hint on their Facebook, will be released March 31.
